BELLETTI: THE CUP AND THE BOWL
Posted on: Tue 21 Jul 2009
Tonight in Pasadena's Rose Bowl, Juliano Belletti will have the chance to
perform in the arena that staged one of his nation's greatest sporting
moments.
Chelsea have played before in stadia which have hosted World Cup Finals -
Rome's Stadio Olimpico, the Olympiastadion in Munich, Stockholm's Rasunda
Stadium and of course Wembley among them - but this game against Inter
will take us for the first time into the Rose Bowl - the venue for the
1994 World Cup Final between Italy and Brazil.
It was a deciding match steeped in the tournament's history - the then
three-times winners from Europe against the three-times champions from
South America, contested on a neutral continent.
Yet although they had never lost the allure long associated with their
name and had produced some acclaimed teams since, it had been 24 years
since Brazil last won the trophy. Eighteen-year-old Belletti had not even
seen them contest a final in his lifetime.
Tuning into the action in the Rose Bowl from his homeland, it is no wonder
he remembers the day 15-years-ago well.
'I was at the beginning of my career in Brazil, and my situation was
difficult because I was living alone away from my family.
'There was me and about 10 other players who saw the game together and of
course all were supporting Brazil. It was amazing because it was so many
years after the third World Cup Brazil won in Mexico. The people had been
waiting for this moment a long time, so it was very good.'
A match without a goal in open play, '94 is low down in the World Cup
Final ranking for entertainment, although the tournament as a whole was
one of the best.
Brazil it appeared were tired of bringing pleasure to spectators but
ending up empty-handed and adopted a less flamboyant approach then
previously, although in Romario and Bebeto up front they still had
strikers of dazzling skill.
'It was a tactical match,' says Belletti, 'and I remember it was very hot
so after the game there was extra-time and penalties, and it was difficult
to play in these conditions, especially after difficult semi-finals for
both teams.
'At that moment [Carlos Alberto] Parreira was the manager and his idea was
always a team with good defence, two midfielders to help the defence and
one or two players in the offensive line - but Mauro Silva and Dunga,
those two midfielders, worked hard in this World Cup.
'I remember that because I was playing in this position at the start of my
career. Dunga played a perfect World Cup,' he says of the current national
manager.
'Romario was not a surprise. When he played at Barcelona or at PSV or
wherever, he always played like the best player. This World Cup was a
World Cup for him. If the World Cup had been in 1995, maybe Brazil don't
win, but in 1994 Romario was in the best moment of his career.'
Not only had Brazil waited close on quarter-of-a-century to lift the
golden trophy, they had seen big rivals Argentina succeed during in that
time and were recently a nation bereaved and in need of a boost, having
lost national motor racing icon Ayrton Senna less than three months before
the Rose Bowl game.
Yet despite the joys of winning, Belletti remembers a touch of sympathy
for the opponents.

World Cup 94
'I felt really sorry for Roberto Baggio [who missed the deciding penalty].
At that moment he was one of the best players in the world and I know how
it is really difficult to shoot a penalty in a final.
'I shot one in the Champions League Final two years ago and there is too
much tension at this moment.
'But for my country it was perfect because Brazil played the better
football in the whole World Cup - not in the Final game - but in the World
Cup Brazil played the better football than Italy.'
