Carlo Ancelotti took the chance to balance up the match minutes of several of those who had not featured so much in the three previous games. It was a plan that paid off as the 100 per cent record was maintained thanks to late goals from Franco Di Santo and Florent Malouda. Di Santo had come so close to finding the net during his appearances in Seattle and Pasadena but looked set to finish empty-handed. That was until on as a second-half sub, he broke the Mexicans' resistance with a close- range finish. The celebration involved many on the Chelsea bench. 'Because he is a young player and he needs goals,' was Carvalho's explanation of the scenes. 'He has quality and he works hard everyday and the goal was important for us but it was more important for him. He needed a goal for his confidence and now he can improve.' 'I feel happy because it is my first goal in the pre-season, and I am happy because I needed to score to improve myself,' echoed Di Santo himself. 'This was good for me, because I have a lot of competition with the other strikers - but I have scored today and I am happy. It is important but the more important here is that Chelsea win and it is the first trophy from pre-season.' The young Argentine arguably did even better with his strong run that led to Malouda adding the second. 'Making goals is as important as scoring because the most important is that the team wins,' he said. Youth was especially on show in defence where 21-year-old Michael Mancienne and 19-year-old Sam Hutchinson started as full-backs, either side of Carvalho and Alex. 'They have got quality and it is good to see Hutch come back from injury, he is doing very well,' commented Carvalho shortly before boarding a flight back to London. 'Of course it is not his position, he likes to play more as a central defender, like Michael does as well, but they can do the full-back job as well, But for me they are better as centre-backs, they enjoy that there. They are good defenders so they can do it either at full-back or centre- back.' Overall Chelsea can be pleased with not just wins over Italy's top two teams last season but also the matching of a Club America side just three days away from the start of their season proper. 'Of course we wanted to improve our fitness and for that the games were good,' assesses Carvalho. 'The opponents they were strong and we gain a lot from that because we have to run and be more focused in the game when you play against big teams. We won every game and the atmosphere was great and so we were pleased to play in this tournament. 'Now it is time to go back and start our games and I think we are ready. 'Last year was the worst year I have had but how could I forget that I had four great years here before. Last year I was unlucky - I got a problem and I never recovered completely and it was a frustrating year for me.
