LAMPARD: I WANT THE LEAGUE BACK
Posted on: Wed 29 Jul 2009
Frank Lampard has set his sights on the Barclays Premier League title
above all other trophies this season.
Although admitting that Champions League success is still a massive 'to
do' on his list, Lampard is adamant there's no contest when it comes to
picking which trophy he'd rather win.
'For me it is the League,' he explains. 'I grew up watching the
Premiership and the League before that and it's a lovely feeling to be the
best team in your country, and I want to get that back.
'The Champions League is definitely something I want to win at least once
in my career, but for me the League is where we need to get to the
consistency levels we had a few years ago.
'We now need to get back to winning ways in terms of the League, we were
dominant for two years and now Manchester United have been playing
fantastically for three years.
'But now there's a real feeling between the players that, although winning
the FA Cup was great this year, we want to go that one step further and
get consistency in the League back and then push for the Champions League.'
So there are two things on Lampard's agenda, and dominance in the world's
best league is one of them, but does our vice-captain's vigour have
anything to do with the new man in charge at Chelsea?
'Carlo Ancelotti has been very impressive,' Lampard notes. 'He has many
strengths, but for me being very close with his players and being very
organised are the main ones.
'Recently we have been working very much with the organisation of the
team. We know ourselves that we need to have organisation in the team, we
need to be organised from the start, front and back.
'Once we have that base and that quality we can score goals and create
goals all the time.'
As with all managers, Ancelotti will instil his philosophy into the side,
and as Lampard mentioned, organisation is a massive part of that. But how
has training adapted to fit his new style?
'It [training] has changed this year. We did quite a lot of running
without the ball last year, this year there is a lot more running with the
ball and a lot more football based stuff.
'That's something players always want to do, especially if they can bring
something new into their game.
'From the first day I came back we were playing small-sided games, keeping
possession and working with the ball, so there has been a nice mix of
working hard and playing football.'
Also being a regular in the England side, Lampard has ambitions beyond his
club.
There has been progress with the England side since Fabio Capello's
appointment, and Chelsea's number 8 believes the next World Cup may be his
nation's time for success.
'We have improved massively under Fabio Capello over the last two years,
but we will need to have our best players fit, we will need to be on good
form and we will need a bit of luck. There are so many factors involved.
'But I certainly feel if you put the top five teams together who can win
it going into the tournament, one of that five would be England.'
