FORMER CHAIRMAN BRIAN MEARS DIES
Posted on: Fri 31 Jul 2009
Brian Mears, chairman of Chelsea Football Club during one of its most
successful and controversial periods, has died aged 78.
Brian grew up at Stamford Bridge and right up to his final weeks he would
fondly reminisce about the first football match he ever witnessed: Chelsea
versus Dynamo Moscow to Stamford Bridge in November 1945, attended by an
estimated crowd of more than 100,000.
With him passes one of the last connections between Chelsea FC and its
wealthy founding family. Brian was the grandson of Joseph Theophilus Mears,
who backed his brother Gus's foundation of the club in 1905, and who
became its landlord on his sibling's death in 1913.
Brian's father, Joe Mears (Joseph's son), was chairman from 1940 to his
sudden death in 1966, and had seen the club win its first league title in
1955; Brian eventually succeeded him in 1969, and his tenure coincided
with success in the 1970 FA Cup final against Leeds United and the Uefa
Cup-Winners' Cup final win over Real Madrid the following season.
With his ostentatious fur coat, sunglasses and Rolls-Royce sporting the
number plate 'CFC II', youthful chairman Brian symbolised Chelsea in the
swinging Sixties. His match-day hospitality to visiting directors was
legendary; though he once turned up at Ipswich Town with a whole salmon to
be told by his jovial hosts, the Cobbolds, that he would have to cook it.

Brian Mears
Brian enjoyed the lifestyle if not the responsibility of such a high-
profile position, and he admitted to being dogged by suggestions that he
would never match up to his father, a domineering figure in the football
world. (He did privately rather enjoy the fact that he won as many
trophies as his more illustrious dad.)
Under his stewardship the club took on a Hollywood lustre, especially as
Richard, now Lord Attenborough brought a succession of his famous friends -
John Mills, Laurence Olivier, Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and
the like - to the Bridge. Brian loved to recall the legendary visit of
Raquel Welch to the Bridge, and his having to break protocol to furnish
her with brandy in the stands.
'Whatever people say about me,' he told me in 2005, 'they were the most
glamorous, fabulous times, when I was chairman.'
Yet many Chelsea fans remember Brian's tenure not for the glitz, nor the
glory days at Old Trafford or in Athens, but for the fateful decision to
embark on an ambitious ground redevelopment in 1971. Riven by inflation,
labour disputes and lengthy delays, the scheme was eventually reduced to
one side, the huge East Stand. The appalling drain on resources ruined the
club's finances, leading directly to the break-up of the great late
1960s/early 1970s team and near-fatal relegations in 1975 and 1979. Two
years after the second drop, Brian was ousted from the board. Just a few
months ago he was still passionately regretting that decision to redevelop.
Brian's role in the damaging sale of shares in the freehold of Stamford
Bridge is less clear. The shares were bought by a property company that
looked to realise much of the land for shops and housing and the football
club was thrown into an attritional ten-year struggle for its existence
that ended in 1992. Supporters understandably turned against the Mears
family, and Brian's successor at Stamford Bridge, Ken Bates, publicly
lambasted them for shaming their ancestors' legacy. Yet Brian maintained
that his estranged wife, June, controlled his shares, not him.
The former Chelsea chairman quit Britain for the United States soon after
these debacles and proved himself, to immense personal satisfaction, with
a very successful business venture. Determined to set the record straight
about his Chelsea days, though, he returned to the UK in time to forge a
friendship with Chelsea's fan and director Matthew Harding in the early
1990s. Mears claimed Harding, before his untimely death in 1996, was
looking to 'rehabilitate' him at the club. Brian also wrote books to set
out the Chelsea story from his personal perspective. He remained a
lifelong supporter and followed results and events keenly, while never
setting foot in Stamford Bridge again.
In the Roman Abramovich era, current Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck involved
Brian in events celebrating the centenary of the club in 2005, which
delighted him. He was also invited by the club to the FA Cup final against
Everton, but had to decline through illness. He succumbed to a heart
problem on 28 July.
Chelsea Football Club would like to express sincere condolence to Brian's
family and friends. He is survived by his son Christopher and daughter
Suzan, as well as five grandchildren.
