THE FIRST GOAL IS THE HARDEST

Goalscorer Salomon Kalou believes we can take heart from Saturday's
comeback at Reading as we approach the season-opening Community Shield
game with Manchester United.
The Ivorian was on target at the Madejski Stadium, coming off the bench to
score the first of our two late goals that earned a draw and kept Carlo
Ancelotti's unbeaten start to Chelsea life intact.
Coming in the 89th minute, it looked as though the 24-year-old forward's
strike had come too late to salvage a result, but a late own goal from
Royals captain Alex Pearce saved the day. As Kalou explained afterwards,
there was always a belief in the side that one goal could spark a second.
'We knew that the 2-1 was the difficult one, after we scored that we knew
we could push on and score a second, which we did in a very short time,'
he said.
'It is positive, sometimes you need to go through difficult situations to
get on top of yourself, and today at Reading was a good test for us.'
Kalou's goal, his first of this pre-season, was a tidy finish with the
outside of the right boot, as the picture shows.
'It was a nice ball from Mikel, I made a good run behind the defenders and
stayed calm in front of the goalkeeper, and I think I finished it well,'
said the former Feyenoord man.
It leaves us looking forward to our Wembley date with Sir Alex Ferguson's
men next weekend, with a week of training centred around strength and
fitness behind us, and one of competitive sharpness ahead.
'The fitness is getting better, after the tour of America everyone is a
little tired because of the jetlag, four towns in 10 days wasn't easy, but
now we are coming back and we will be stronger by the next game,' Kalou
said.
'Training in the next week will be tough, and we are looking forward to
the Manchester United game at Wembley next week, I hope we can win.'
