SHARPENING UP
Posted on: Tue 04 Aug 2009
After Saturday's draw at Reading, Carlo Ancelotti promised he would be
working on match sharpness in training this week.
That is exactly what happened on Monday as the manager oversaw an
intensive session, encouraging attacking play in a competitive environment.
Sunday was a free day for the players, and so fitness coach Glen Driscoll
oversaw a comprehensive warm-up before the real action got going.

Training
Using a square pitch, covering the area of around half a normal one,
Ancelotti had mini goals on each touchline, with two sides aiming to score
in one of either two goals.
This encourages quick movement of players, looking to find space, while
also allowing for fast switches of play from one side to another, trying
to catch the opposition out of position.

Training
Michael Ballack again trained with the rest of the squad after being given
Saturday off to further rehabilitate his toe injury, and he should be fine
for Manchester United.
The German will likely be given a run-out in a behind-closed-doors
friendly against a QPR side at Cobham this afternoon.
After a brief respite, the players worked individually with a ball,
alternating between sprinting and jogging, before returning to a full-
sized match with goalkeepers also involved.

DOUBLE SHIFTS CONTINUE
Posted on: Wed 05 Aug 2009
The full squad was back together again on Wednesday for another double
session, as the first competitive action of the season draws closer.
Tuesday's reserve outing gave valuable game time to a number of first team
players, but reduced the numbers training with Carlo Ancelotti and his
staff, so the Italian will have been pleased to welcome back that number
to the group.

Paul Clement shows his abilities
Unseen for a little while, the popular keep-ball made a return in this
morning's session to kick things off, an episode that saw players throwing
themselves into blocks and tackles to try and break the cycle of
consecutive passes going on around them.
After that it was into another small game using the mini goal, this time
Paul Clement showing off some neat footwork despite never being a
professional player himself, before Ancelotti oversaw some sprint drills
to really push the players.

Carlo keeps an eye on the sprints
Adjacently, Joe Cole was working on his rehabilitation from meniscus
surgery with physio Thierry Laurent, his recovery is expected to take a
few more weeks.
