RESERVES EDGED OUT BY UZBEKS
Posted on: Fri 14 Aug 2009
Chelsea's reserves were defeated 1-0 by the Uzbekistan Under 20 national
side at Cobham on Friday.
The second string, who were coached on the day by Adie Viveash, created a
host of good opportunities but were unable to break through a well
organised visiting defence.
Academy manager Neil Bath was watching the game, and believed the young
Blues could have come away with a more positive result against a side that
will compete at the Under 20 World Cup next month in Egypt, placed in the
group stages alongside England.
'It was a close game and we probably had more chances than them but
obviously they took their chance,' he said.
'At times we struggled with their movement and rotation, but as the game
went on we started to open them up a bit more and created our own chances.
In particular Michael Woods had a one-on-one that he will feel he should
have done better on.
'We got ourselves into good positions but we were offside on too many
occasions.
They were very well organised and we released the ball a little late, the
front players needed to be a little more patience to create chances.'
The game was played on a day when two reserve team midfielders, Jacob
Mellis and Liam Bridcutt, completed loan moves to Football League sides,
but there were two players in the middle of the park for Chelsea that
impressed.
'I felt that Jacopo Sala and Jack Cork both had particularly good games,
and on another day a draw would have been a fair result,' Bath said.
The game had been organised by Paul Clement before he stepped up to the
first team, and further strengthened the relationship between Chelsea and
the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), with whom we share a commitment to
grass roots football.
Uzbekistan's Server Djeparov, the current Asian Player of the Year, still
has the option to come to Cobham to train for one month as part of his
award resulting from the partnership between the club and the AFC.
The attacking midfielder plays for the Bunyodkor club, which is now
coached by former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.
