A-Rod looking to kick slump
A-Rod
Rodriguez working with Mattingly on mechanical flaw in swing

WASHINGTON -- Just as an auto mechanic works to fix up a car, Don Mattingly
is attempting to fix Alex Rodriguez.
Mattingly, the Yankees' hitting coach, detected a flaw in Rodriguez's swing
over the past few days, and the pair believe that with a little work, A-Rod
will work his way out of his horrific slump.
"The number one step is to realize you have an issue, address it and move
forward," Rodriguez said Friday night. "The relief is that there is an issue,
and we can address it. It's better than just struggling and feeling like
you're lost."
Whatever Mattingly and Rodriguez worked on before Saturday's game, it seemed
to have a positive effect. The third baseman went 2-for-5 with a two-run home
run and a single.
"It's a work in progress," Rodriguez said as he exited the clubhouse.
A-Rod
"Alex was great," said manager Joe Torre. "Even the at-bats he didn't get
hits, he had really quality at-bats. Whatever Donnie and Alex came together
on, it certainly looked better."
Mattingly and A-Rod were at RFK Stadium early Saturday morning, working in
the batting cage. After doing what Mattingly called "hang drills," which are
designed to get Rodriguez to keep his weight where it should be, A-Rod took
his momentum into batting practice.
Mattingly所謂的"Hang drills(一項為了讓A-Rod的重心留在正確位置的練習)"之後,
A-Rod
"His BP today was tremendous," Mattingly said. "He was nice and easy, hitting
balls that were just ridiculous. When he gets it together like that, you know
it's right. You want to keep building."
Mattingly told Rodriguez to replicate his game swing during BP, something he
doesn't always do. Specifically, he wanted him to use his leg kick to get his
timing down. It worked, and A-Rod was able to carry that into the game.
"When you're trying to do something and you see instant success, the guy
himself feels it's right," Mattingly said. "When he's hitting balls the way
he was in BP, he knows it's right. Being able to transfer that when it's 95
and changing speeds is a different thing, and we had some success doing that.
Hopefully we'll build on this. Once he gets the feel, this thing will be in
the rearview mirror."
Rodriguez refused to get into details about his mechanics on Friday night,
saying the issue was too complicated. Mattingly tried to put it in basic
terms, saying that A-Rod was not staying on his back leg and carrying his
weight effectively.
"Right now, when he picks his foot up, he's falling forward," Mattingly said
after Friday's game. "He really needs to be able to glide and ride that leg.
Everything we do over the next couple of days will work towards that."
"At this point," Mattingly added, "I felt like we needed to have an
intervention here and try something a little different."
Mattingly spoke with Rodriguez following his eighth-inning at-bat on Friday,
after A-Rod struck out with the bases loaded.
"I think it's a common thing for anybody that struggles. You either go
forward or come sideways," Mattingly said. "It's been long enough now that I
think he needs to try a few different things, get his feel back more than
anything."
Mattingly
Rodriguez entered Saturday's game in a 4-for-25 skid, having gone 1-for-5
with three strikeouts on Friday. He was hitting .156 (7-for-45) in June with
one home run and three RBIs.
"We all know what kind of player he is and what kind of ability he has,"
Torre said. "He gets in his own way, maybe, the combination of
overpreparation and the fact that he's pressing."
"When you have a mechanical thing, you have to address it," Rodriguez said.
"Before you do, you may have a Band-Aid on something, but it's not really
going to be fixed; especially the way I want to fix it, because I want to do
special things."
"He's no different than anybody else; it happens to everybody," Mattingly
said. "A guy of his caliber is going to come out of it. If I didn't say one
thing the rest of the year, he'd find it himself."
