Due to the recent backlash A-Rod has suffered with this whole Madonna-Guy Richie-Ms. Rodriguez-Lenny Kravitz romance tabloid fiasco, I have decided to look into a few things. How can a man like Alex Rodriguez be so loved, yet so hated? After all, this is a man on pace to break Barry Bonds' all-time home run record of 762. That's kind of a big deal if you ask me (and Ron Burgundy). In this article we will take a look at why people love/hate the man they call A-Rod....
Why We Love Him
1) Good Looks: It doesn't take a woman or any homosexual male to see that A-Rod is a good looking dude. I mean yeah, he's strapped with tons of cash, but the guy keeps himself in tremendous shape. Plus, chicks dig a guy comfortable enough with his sexuality to get massaged shirtless by another shirtless man who looks like Butterbean's bastard son.
2) Plays on the Yankees: Okay, so for every baseball fan that hates the Evil Empire, there are millions more that are not in the New York-New Jersey area that adore this team. They are extremely popular, as are all their players. It's the same thing in the NBA with the Lakers or football with Steelers fans from across the country. Just ask LeBron James.
3) Charitable: The man has a kind side, which is evident in his A-Rod Basketball Classic tournaments that raise money for Miami/Dade County-area charities. He also donated $3.9 million dollars to the University of Miami to renovate their baseball stadium in 2003. In addition to that, in 2005, Alex donated $200,000 to the Children's Aid Society, a NYC-based children's advocacy/charity group. Can you hate a man that's charitable?
4) Great Player: You can say what you want about his postseason woes, but Rodriguez has consistently proved to be one of the best players in baseball every year. Let's take a look at some of A-Rod's accomplishments:
6-time AL All-Star (SS) (1997-98, 2000-03)
4-time AL All-Star (3B) (2004-07)
3-time AL MVP (2003, 2005, 2007)
7-time AL Silver Slugger Award (SS) (1996, 1998-2003)
2-time AL Silver Slugger Award (3B) (2005, 2007)
4-time AL Hank Aaron Award (2001-03, 2007)
2-time Baseball America MLB Player of the Year (2000, 2002)
4-time Baseball America 1st-Team Major League All-Star (SS) (1998, 2000-03)
2-time AL Gold Glove Award (SS) (2002, 2003)
Not a bad resume to say the least. And remember, baseball is a team game. One player does not make a championship team.
5) Home Runs: Currently, A-Rod has 535 home runs at the ripe old age of thirty-two. If he plays at a high level the next six or seven seasons averaging at least 35-40 homers (or a bit less), he can come close or even break Barry Bonds' record 762. And we all know how controversial it is having Barry Bonds' as the all-time home run king. Besides the little Jose Canseco "I have dirt on A-Rod" episode, most think Rodriguez has played the game the right way. If Rodriguez were to pass Bonds, baseball would
have a home run king whose legacy hasn't been tainted by allegations of using performing enhancing drugs.
Why We Hate Him
1) Lack of Postseason Success: Alex Rodriguez may be the best player in baseball and may not have to wait long to be a sure thing in the Hall of Fame. However, his career has been marred a bit by his disappearing acts in the postseason. Case and point, during the Red Sox-Yankees ALCS series in 2004, Rodriguez's offensive productivity vanished from the previous series. The Red Sox were able win four straight after being down 3-0 in the worst collapse in Yanks' history. He also averaged around .200 in
batting in 2005 and 2006 during the playoffs. 2007 didn't do him or his teammates any favors, getting bounced by the Cleveland Indians in the ALDS.
2) Distraction: The 'D' word is very dynamic in sports. Sometimes it is utilized as an excuse for a team's poor play, other times it is what it is: A distraction. One could make the case A-Rod's episodes with the media not only detriment the public perception of him, but his team as well. From being caught at a strip club behind his now ex-wife's back to hinting awhile back that him a Yankees Golden Boy Derek Jeter weren't the closest of pals.
3) Jealousy: Come on, who isn't jealous of this guy? He is good looking, had a hot wife, and currently has a bank account that could impress Vince McMahon. Whether he or ANYBODY deserves all that is for you to decide.
4) The Perception of Being a Jerk: Alex Rodriguez may be a great player, but let's face it. He doesn't come off as the sweetest thing to hit your TV screen since Dora the Explorer. If recent stories are true, Alex Rodriguez will be known as the man who hooked up with Madonna, while they were both still legally married to their respective spouses with kids. If you can't see this potential Public Relations nightmare coming, you might want to see an eye doctor.
5) Overpaid: Let's face it: Athletes are overpaid, whether we like it or not. Some get a little extra money than they deserve. Others get overpaid like Barry Zito. And then there's A-Rod who's obnoxiously overpaid. Now I know what you're thinking. "It's Steinbrenner's money. Who cares?!" Well, Yankees fans that pay for tickets and overpriced concessions to support Mr. Rodriguez's enormous salary (and the rest of the clubhouse). Their reward from the man that signed a 10-year, 275 Million dollar
contract: 0 World Series berths/titles.
Don't get wrong. If I was a athlete who had an owner throw me that kind of money, I would (and many others) would take that cash in a heartbeat. As the late Notorious B.I.G. so honestly put it, "More money, more problems." Indeed, that is the case with A-Rod. He may get unfairly criticized, but when a man is being paid 28 Million per year, it comes with the territory.
I don't hate A-Rod. Actually, I'm pretty fond of him. I just think he's a great player whose flaws overshadow the great things he does on and off the field because of the media and some poor choices. So there you have it: My ten reasons why fans love and hate Alex Rodriguez. Agree? Disagree? Agree to disagree? As usual, feedback is always appreciated.
