After watching Bautista for three games this weekend, I absolutely agree that the changes he and hitting coach Dwayne Murphy have implemented are the major factor in the power outburst. In past seasons, his swing was a bit defensive and out of control a large portion of the time. However, getting an earlier load, making a slight change in hand positioning, and -- according to Bautista -- picking up the consistent playing time that he hadn't necessarily gotten as a part-time player the past two seasons, have all contributed to a breakout campaign thus far. The book on Bautista for the last few years was that you could get him out with good fastballs, and that he was a better hitter against secondary stuff. The easy thing to do would be for me to say he's going to regress, and that it's a fluke, but I'm not so sure it's all that simple. When we look at a player making a big improvement, the first thing we have to do is see what's different about the player that could indicate something other than just a hot streak or a statistical anomaly based on sample size.
