[外電] Cavaliers: Guards could be on the move
When the Cavaliers take the court for their first game next season, there's a
possibility they'll have an entirely new starting backcourt.
Their guard play was one of the reasons for the Cavs' demise in the
postseason last May. That's why some changes probably need to be made in the
backcourt.
It's not a secret around the league the Cavs have been listening to offers
for point guard Mo Williams. Trading Williams could be a way to get back into
the NBA draft on Thursday.
The Cavs currently don't have a draft pick, but that could change by Thursday.
Since coming to the team in the summer of 2008, Williams has had two very
good regular seasons and two very bad postseasons.
However, the Cavs aren't about to give him away. Cavs general manager Chris
Grant values Williams highly and they want value for their high-scoring guard.
Yahoo! Sports is reporting the Cavs have talked to Portland about Williams,
who averaged 15.8 points and 5.3 assists last season. A league source said it
was an old rumor. Talks could rekindle near the draft, however.
Veteran point guard Andre Miller could be involved in such talks. Miller,
drafted by the Cavs in 1999, might not make sense in Cleveland if LeBron
James re-signs. He's a player who dominates the ball.
The contracts don't line up, as Williams will make $9.3 million next year and
Miller will earn $7.3 million. The Cavs could take back Miller and a $2
million trade exception. A draft pick could also be involved.
Williams, 28, is a good complementary player with James because of his
outside shooting. He's also one of James' closest friends on the team.
However, James would likely support a trade if it makes the team better.
If James signs elsewhere, the 34-year-old Miller might be a viable option. He
averaged 14 points and 5.4 assists last year with the Trail Blazers.
Williams would be a good fit in Portland with shooting guard Brandon Roy, who
is their primary ballhandler and facilitator.
One rumor floating around — it could be a bit outlandish — has Williams
going to Sacramento for guard Beno Udrih and the No. 5 pick. That doesn't
sound like something the Kings would do, especially if Kentucky center
DeMarcus Cousins is still available at No. 5 in Thursday's NBA draft.
If that deal was on the board, the Cavs would have already done it.
Williams could play in the Kings' system with 6-5 point guard Tyreke Evans.
The Cavs are testing the market for not only Williams but point guard Delonte
West.
If West is on the roster on Aug. 3, the Cavs are on the hook to pay his
entire $4.7 million salary next season. If he's waived before that date, he's
guaranteed just $500,000. That might prove to be attractive to teams trying
to cut payroll.
Anthony Parker, who started the entire season at shooting guard, might be
better suited to come off the bench. Until the Cavs find a better player at
the position, he'll remain in the starting lineup.
