Mourinho delighted with Terry
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho insisted skipper John Terry is worth every penny of
his lucrative new contract after watching him guide the club into the Carling
Cup quarter-finals.
The Blues will make the short trip to Fulham in the last eight after squeezing
past Newcastle in extra-time at St James' Park.
Goals from substitutes Eidur Gudjohnsen and Arjen Robben, who ran half the
length of the pitch to claim his third in as many games with a cool finish,
ultimately sealed a tight tie.
But it was the foundation provided by the men at the back, and Terry in
particular, which allowed the forwards to work their magic.
The England international this week signed a new five-year deal, reportedly
worth 80,000 a week to him, but Mourinho is convinced it is money well-spent.
'I think he deserves every coin,' he said. 'I don't know exactly how much it is
and it doesn't matter so much, but he's the type of person who deserves every
coin.
'He works a lot, he's ready for everything, he's a good leader, he's fantastic
for the atmosphere of the team, he's a top player.
'To be fair, in this country, maybe you have the best central defenders in the
world - John Terry, Sol Campbell, (Rio) Ferdinand, (Ledley) King, (Jonathan)
Woodgate when he can play - you have the best central defenders in the world, I
think.
'John Terry, for me, also because he's a Chelsea boy - he grew up here, he was
born in Chelsea and he feels Chelsea like nobody else - he's a big influence in
the dressing room and he deserves every coin.'
Newcastle gave as good as they got in normal time and were denied on several
occasions by forgotten man Carlo Cudicini in the Chelsea goal, but it was they
who eventually wilted.
'For me, (Andy) O'Brien and (Titus) Bramble played fantastically,' Mourinho
said. 'They did a fantastic job. I never saw Bramble play so well.
'But to play two hours against (Mateja) Kezman, against (Damien) Duff at a high
pace, and later on, I played with Gudjohnsen and Robben when they were tired.
'Robben is the type of player who gives no chance in those situations. When I
played them, it was just to kill the game. I thought it was maybe possible
during the 90 minutes, but it was not possible, it was in extra-time.'
Magpies boss Graeme Souness was left to pick up the pieces of a third defeat in
four games for his side, with Manchester United due at St James' Park on Sunday,
but while he was disappointed, he was far from discouraged.
'There was a certain amount of anger and frustration with the way we lost
against Fulham,' he said. 'I think we all felt that.
'This time, they can be proud of themselves. We've played an in-form team and I
think, certainly in the 90 minutes and up until the goal went in, we were a
better team than them.
'It's hard on us. The first goal decided everything.'
