International Cup report: Chelsea 0 Dinamo Zagreb 1
Fri 16 Dec 2016
Our development squad went down to a first defeat in eight games at
Aldershot this evening (Friday), as Dinamo Zagreb ran out 1-0 winners in
the Premier League International Cup.
Filip Mihaljevic's header was all that ended up separating the two sides
in a tight contest, leaving the Blues third in Group D ahead of the final
round of matches. Only the group winners are guaranteed progress to the
last-eight so Adi Viveash's side now need to beat Swansea City next week
and hope Zagreb drop points against Feyenoord in order to land top spot.
There were three changes from the side that started our group opener 17
days previously, a 2-1 victory over Feyenoord. Joseph Colley and Dujon
Sterling replaced Fikayo Tomori and Fankaty Dabo in a back four protecting
goalkeeper Bradley Colley, with Trevoh Chalobah and captain Jay Dasilva
making up the defensive unit.
Kyle Scott came into the team on the left side of an attacking trio behind
central striker Ike Ugbo, with Josimar Quintero operating in the number 10
role and Miro Muheim working from the right. Marco van Ginkel partnered
Ruben Sammut in central midfield.
This was the first time a Chelsea side had met Croatian opposition in a
competitive fixture, though neither side started the contest with enough
quality in the final third to trouble the respective goalkeepers. Karlo
Muhar forced the first save of the night from Collins after nine minutes
but his strike from almost 40 yards required the most routine of stops
from our keeper.
Viveash's side carved out a promising attack moments later, with Scott
central to their advances. The midfielder's neat first touch initiated the
move and Dasilva carried the ball forward down the left flank, before
Scott tested Dinko Horkas in the Zagreb goal.
The threat from the visitors became more prominent as the half progressed.
Daniel Carvajal Olmo spun cleverly away from Sammut's challenge before
firing a shot narrowly over the bar, before the Zagreb number 10 struck
harmlessly wide after a tidy move from the Croatians.
Chalobah was called into some important defending in his 18-yard box,
stretching to divert a dangerous left-sided cross from Davor Lovren behind
for a corner. Zagreb skipper Vinko Soldo won the header from the resulting
set-piece but nodded straight into the grateful arms of Collins.
Dujon Sterling steps in to win a tackle.
However, there was nothing the Chelsea goalkeeper could do to prevent his
side falling behind eight minutes before the break. Kobi Darick Morris was
allowed to advance from right-back to deliver a dangerous cross to the
back post and Mihaljevic rose highest to steer his header past Collins via
the underside of the bar.
Chalobah came closest to levelling before the interval with a series of
headers that caused Horkas increasing concern, the latter glanced just
wide following Muheim's inswinging cross from the right. Ugbo went close
early after the restart after good work from the Blues to win possession
high up the field down the right. Scott turned over possession and
Sterling threaded a pass forward to Ugbo, whose low strike was spilled by
Horkas and the loose ball hoisted clear by Filip Uremovic.
Viveash looked to his bench for an injection of energy after an hour,
introducing Jacob Maddox and Mason Mount to proceedings. The impact was
not instant but the latter did combine neatly with Van Ginkel to fashion
an opening after 70 minutes, although Soldo intervened with an excellent
sliding tackle to toe the ball away from the Dutchman as he wound up to
shoot.
The hosts turned up the pressure in the final quarter of an hour, hunting
a goal that would earn them a group point and prevent Zagreb moving above
them in the Group D table. Van Ginkel headed wide at the near post
following substitute Tariq Uwakwe's corner, while Sterling teed up Mount
with a perfect cross having motored beyond Davor Lovren down the right.
Mount had drifted into space in the box but his header looped off-target.
Chalobah glanced another headed chance wide and then Maddox teed up Ugbo
with a low centre from the left, though the striker's effort deflected off
Soldo and behind for a corner, which the Blues could not capitalise on. It
capped a frustrating evening for the hosts and means a victory over
Swansea next week is crucial for their chances of progressing. That game
is played on Thursday 22 December, with free entry once again at Aldershot.
