16th February 2003 -- Roy Makaay commented on last night’s match that “it
was a difficult one, also because it was very cold. But we survived and
matches like this one must win to be at the top at the end of the season. I
admit though that we suffered a lot, but we win a lot of away matches this
season and that’s great. Let’s see if we can continue winning the next
matches also.”
When asked about the goal he scored, Makaay said that “I am here to do my
job and that was what I did. The best thing now is that we have rest on
Sunday and so we can prepare ourselves on Monday and Tuesday for the
Champions League match. We must win those two matches against Basel at
whatever cost, because we must compete with Manchester United and Juventus
for a place in the Quarter Finals. That’s our target now.”
Naybet formed a partnership with Jorge Andrade at the back, and commented
that “we used our chances and scored a goal, but the most important thing
in football is the result. In defence we played well although it’s the
responsibility of the whole team, and this win now will give us much moral
to stay close to the top of the Liga.”
Another defender, Hector, said that “the first thing we should stress is
that the pitch was very difficult to play on. There was a lot of ice and
playing on it was almost impossible and combinations were really difficult.
But we tried it another way and the win has much value for us. Valladolid
were dangerous but we stopped them well and I think we deserved to win.”
Finally, Duscher also commented on the match and said that “we pressed very
well in the midfield, more than in other matches, and that was what we could
see in the match itself and in the final result. Let’s hope we can continue
this in the Champions League and let’s wait for the other Liga results on
Sunday.”
