With Garland guaranteed at least $7.25 million, it begs the question of why the Diamondbacks didn't make a more aggressive play on free agent Randy Johnson. The Diamondbacks are believed to have offered Johnson a one-year deal worth between $2.5 million and $3 million in November; he signed a one-year, $8 million deal, which includes another $5 million in bonuses, with the Giants in December. Byrnes said the club's finances have changed since November. Essentially, Byrnes said less money is being budgeted for the upcoming draft, partially because free agent Adam Dunn wasn't offered arbitration, making more money available for the major-league payroll. Byrnes said he expected advance notice from Johnson's agents on the deal with the Giants, which he learned about through the media, and had requested a face-to-face meeting with Johnson to explain the "the scenarios of the off-season that might involve a longer process toward maybe a deal." But, Byrnes said, "We understand the risk when a player goes to free agency." "Randy made every effort to re-sign with the Diamondbacks at a price significantly below his value in free agency," said Barry Meister, one of Johnson's agents. "The Diamondbacks knew at the time exactly what that was, and the Diamondbacks had a significant amount of time in which they had the exclusive rights to sign Randy. He reiterates that he loved his time with the Diamondbacks and wishes them well." Gordon close? The Diamondbacks appear to be closing in on a deal for free-agent reliever Tom Gordon. "We've had a number of conversations, and we're getting close," said Rick Thurman, Gordon's agent, without elaborating. Gordon, 41, was one of the better relievers in baseball before suffering shoulder and elbow injuries the past two seasons. From 1998 to 2006, he posted a cumulative 2.97 ERA in 488 2/3 innings.
