Maribel: "I'm dying to be in Barcelona"
Maribel Dominguez, Barcelona's women's team's star signing,
has told fcbarcelona.com in an exclusive interview that she
wants to join the team as soon as possible.
The Mexican striker, who will arrive in Barcelona on Wednesday
morning, is thrilled at the prospect of playing in Europe and
thoroughly grateful for this opportunity to don the FC Barcelona
jersey. She hopes that her goals will be able to help Natalia
Astrain's team make progress in the women's Superliga. She already
knows all about Frank Rijkaard's team.
Why have you decided to sign for FC Barcelona?
"Before I say anything, I'd like to thank the Barca board for the
wonderful opportunity it has offered me. My main priority is to break
new ground in football. I love the idea of forming part of a major
institution like FC Barcelona."
To what extent has the fact that your compatriot Rafael Marquez
plays for Barca influenced that decision?
"The fact that he is playing for the first team had a positive
effect on me, because he's a Mexican like me, and he gives his
everything to play very good football. He's a great all-rounder
who can play in several different positions, depending on what
the manager needs. The club has offered him a chance and he is
responding well. I want to do the same when I join: to give it
my all. I want to earn the place I need in the team to show what
I can do in a team of Barcelona's level."
What do you know about FC Barcelona's women's team?
"To be honest, not that much. I know it's a very famous team with
a very young squad. What's important is to join a team with a proud
history."
And the club?
"What I know best is the men's first team, because I hear news about
them every day. It's an amazing team with players of extremely high
quality. They are also top of the table and way ahead of the chasing
pack."
What contribution do you think you can make to the team trained by
Natalia Astrain?
"All I'm thinking of doing is arriving, giving it my best and scoring
a lot of goals. Any player who joins a club will first want to win a
regular place in the first team. What I really want to do is help the
team move forward."
What is your main ambition in this new stage of your life in European
football?
"My main aim is to become one of the most outstanding players. To
score goals and to make my name for doing so."
Considering that the Mexican league will start in 2006, do you have
any plans in that respect?
"I've got no plans in that respect. All I want to do is to get to
Barca and earn a place in the team. If I can do that, I'd like to
stay there."
What differences are there between women's football in Mexico and in
Europe?
"European football is about the short passing game, it's fast and
very complete. Meanwhile, Mexican football is not up to that level.
Mexican football is a bit like Brazilian football, because we
dribble the ball a lot."
Were you expecting the repercussions of signing for FC Barcelona?
"I am really pleased in that respect. I'm dying to get to Barcelona
and get to know my new team-mates. I'm thrilled that the media is so
fascinated by my arrival at such an important institution as Barca."

Marquez: "She's the revelation of Mexican football"
In declarations to fcbarcelona.com, Mexican defender
Rafael Marquez has said that Maribel Dominguez "is
the revelation of Mexican football". The Barca number
4 defines the player as a "striker with a natural
goalscoring instinct". He adds that Maribel Dominguez
"is very skilful and plays very fast football".
Meanwhile, the coach of the women's team, Natalia Astrain,
is highly satisfied with the idea of welcoming the Mexican
international captain to her side: "I'm very pleased because
she scores goals with ease and has plenty of experience.
She has played in the United States and played several
international matches for Mexico. So, she's a highly
experienced player and the team needs that kind of experience
because it is made up of very young players. I'm sure that she
will lead the team. She'll contribute lots of character."
Natalia Astrain has commented that the team "will give
Maribel a very warm welcome because we are not in a very
strong position at the moment. Any help she can give us
will make things considerably better" added the Barca coach.
