It looked as if a great star had been born, but over the subsequent eight years and 35 caps, the relationship between the lad from the Parisian suburb of Trappes and Les Bleus has been characterised by a catalogue of misunderstandings, unfortunate utterances and tense stand-offs. 在1999年二月十日，這名才剛滿二十歲的球員就在溫布利球場以兩度攻破英格蘭大門，向世人宣告他的到來但在隨後的八年時光裡頭，他僅有三十五次出賽而他給人的印象也常常被誤解為個性難纏、愛亂放砲，最後而被國家隊冷凍 In 2002, the relationship appeared to have plumbed new and irretrievable depths when Anelka, having been called up by Jacques Santini after a rash of withdrawals from the squad, flatly refused to answer his country's call, declaring: "I don't want to be a replacement for a replacement. He (Santini) will have to get down on one knee if he wants me to come back." These rash words would earn Anelka many months out in the cold. "I'll never be under as much pressure as I was that day. I felt as if the whole world was watching me," he still recalls vividly. My position in midfield gave me a better overview of the play, and I learned to control the ball more effectively and find gaps for my team-mates. On his return to the national team fold in 2005, this position was still occupied by a certain Zinedine Zidane, but the master's retirement after Germany 2006 has left a vacancy to be filled in Domenech's tactical system. In other words, it was an archetypal 'nine-and-a-half's' goal rather than a piece of traditional centre forward play. "It's nice to have scored in an important away match," he said afterwards. "There was added pressure, but I tend to perform well in the bigger games. Because I like to play as a supporting player, I went out to the right and to the left. "Now that's the Nicolas Anelka I like to see," declared Raymond Domenech. "When he plays like that, he's a real candidate for a starting place in the side. On that kind of form, he can't be ignored." So Anelka has had to wait until 28 years of age and 35 caps (nine goals) to add a new dimension to his game. More of a team player who automatically looks to find his fellow Bleus, the former bad boy has also undergone a personal transformation. "I feel as if my image is changing, but it's not down to any strategy on my part. These days, I'm wearing my heart on my sleeve more. I'm much more open to others, so they understand me better. But there is no doubt that the new Anelka is capable of commanding a place for himself in this burgeoning showcase of blue talent.
