Thousands welcome Portuguese national team home

Thousands of flag-waving fans welcomed Portugal's national team home from the
World Cup in Germany where they finished fourth, their second-best
performance in the history of the tournament.
幾千名的葡萄牙球迷揮舞著國旗歡迎國家隊從德國凱旋歸來。
葡萄萄在星期六進行的季軍賽中以1-3不敵地主德國，
雖然只拿到第4名，但是這已經是葡萄牙歷史上第2好的成績了。
Fire trucks sprayed the plane carrying the squad with a red and green liquid,
the colours of Portugal's flag, after it touched down at Portela airport as
some 4,000 cheering supporters, according to police estimates, looked on
under a sunny sky.
在飛機降落在Portela機場後，
一旁的消防車噴出紅、綠色的水柱---那是葡萄牙國旗的顏色。

The team, which lost 3-1 to hosts Germany on Saturday in the third-place
playoff in Stuttgart on Saturday, then boarded a bus and were escorted by a
police motorcade to the National Stadium just outside Lisbon where a
celebration with live music was held in their honour.

More than 10,000 supporters, many wearing team jerseys, waved flags and
scarves while chanting "Por-tu-gal" and "Champions" when Luiz Felipe
Scolari's squad stepped on to the pitch of the stadium.

receiving now. We know that we still owe you something," he added as he stood
surrounded by the players decked in matching black suits and white shirts.

Scolari, who led his native Brazil to the World Cup title in 2002, is under
contract with the Portuguese Football Federation until the end of the month.
He has said he would like to stay on but has yet to extend his contract.

Portugal had only ever been to three World Cups before this year's finals and
failed to get past the first round in two of them.
Their greatest triumph was making the semi-finals in 1966, where they lost to
England 2-1 and went on to finish in third place.

Legendary winger Luis Figo, who along with striker Pedro Pauleta played his
last match for the national team on Saturday, thanked the crowd for their
support throughout the tournament.
"For us it is an honour and a pleasure to be here. Logically we would have
liked to have brought home the trophy but unfortunately we were not able to,"
he told the crowd which responded with cheers and applause.

The arrival of the national team's plane and the celebration which followed
was broadcast live on Portugal's three free-to-air television channels as
well as the nation's two 24-hour cable news channels.

The reception contrasted with the jeers the squad received when it returned
to Portugal from the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea where they made
a shock first-round exit after losing to the United States in their opening
fixture.
