Federer, Nadal Among Tennis Nominees at Laureus Awards
Roger Federer leads an impressive group of professional tennis players
nominated for this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards. Federer, who was
last year named World Sportsman of the Year (for his standout 2004 season),
again has been nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in world
sport.
Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, the Croatian Davis Cup team, Kim Clijsters and
Martina Hingis have also been nominated for the 2005 awards.
Roger Federer proved to be in a class of his own in 2005, producing a
remarkable 81-4 season, capturing a joint circuit-leading 11 titles and an
unprecedented four ATP Masters Series shields. He became just the fifth
player in the Open Era to hold down the INDESIT ATP No. 1 Ranking for the
entire year and established an Open Era record of winning 24 finals won in
a row – a run dating back to October 2003. The 24-year-old once again rose
to the occasion at Wimbledon and the US Open, successfully defending his
titles to become the first man in almost 80 years to win both in
back-to-back years.
Rafael Nadal, who has been nominated for the Laureus Newcomer of the Year
Award, put together one of the most prolific seasons in ATP history,
capturing a teenage record 11 titles, including four ATP Masters Series
shields and the Roland Garros crown. The 19-year-old clay court king won
79 matches — a remarkable 39 more than his 2004 total — and became the
first teenager to finish World No. 2 in nearly two decades
Andy Murray also has been nominated for the Laureus Newcomer of the Year
Award. The Scottish teenager made the biggest jump of any player in the
Top 100 from the previous year, climbing 449 ranking spots. He was the
second-youngest player in year-end Top 100 and the first teen from Great
Britain to finish in year-end Top 100 since Buster Mottram in 1974. He
reached at least the second round at nine of 10 ATP events.
The Croatian Davis Cup team has been nominated for the Laureus World Team
of the Year. The Croatian team led their nation to its first Davis Cup
title, defeating the Slovak Republic on foreign soil in the final. In the
first round the Croatian team defeated a full-strength USA team featuring
Roddick, Agassi and the Bryan brothers. It marked the first time in history
that the USA had been bundled out in the first round when playing at home.
Ivan Ljubicic enjoyed a near-perfect season, winning 11 of the 12 rubbers
he played.
Kim Clijsters has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the
Year award and the Laureus Comeback of the Year Awards - an award for which
Martina Hingis has also been nominated. After returning from a wrist injury
that sidelined her for most of 2004 and required surgery, Clijsters led the
Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in titles by winning nine events, the US Open Series
and her first major singles title, the US Open. During her impressive summer
season, she won 36 of 37 matches, the winningest hard court season ever.
Clijsters finished at No. 2 in the world.
