Murray into Cincinnati quarters
Andy Murray comfortably beat Dmitry Tursunov in straight sets to extend
his winning run over the Russian and reach the Cincinnati Masters
quarter-finals.
The Scot broke the world number 34 twice in the first set and quickly
opened a 3-0 lead with some fantastic shots in the second to win 6-3 6-3.
Tursunov, who has now lost all five of their matches, had little to offer
in reply when Murray upped his game.
Murray will now face Spain's Carlos Moya who beat Russia's Igor Andreev.
In hot and humid conditions, the world number nine dictated many of the
rallies and continually came up with the answers to Tursunov's hard-hitting
groundstrokes.
"It's so hot, unbelievably humid, you get out of breath really quickly so I
was happy to come through in two sets," Murray said.
606: DEBATE
How far can Murray go in Cincinnati?
"I started to feel the ball better when I broke him early in the second.
Against him it's so important to stay solid because he can produce some huge
shots, get on a roll, and I was lucky that I didn't let him do that today.
"I changed the pace of the ball well and used the short slice and he didn't
like that very much."
Murray, 21, began with purpose coming back from 0-30 down to break Tursunov
in the opening game but poor serving in the sixth game allowed the Russian to
break back for 3-3.
From there, though, Murray broke again after Tursunov double-faulted twice
and won the next three games convincingly with some wonderful forehand
strokes.
Bizarrely, Tursunov's frustration carried over into criticising the ball
boy who he said was breaking the rhythm of the match and Murray took full
advantage of his opponent's break in concentration by establishing a 3-0 lead
in the second set with a wonderful array of shots.
The backhand winner after a long rally which broke the Russian in the
second game was a particular highlight and Murray will go into the last eight
against Moya buoyed a mature performance.
Murray will fancy his chances against Moya after the Spaniard played
twice in one day defeating Andreev 6-4 7-6 having come through a second-round
match against fellow Russian Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 4-6 6-2 earlier on Thursday.
Elsewhere, third seed Novak Djokovic swept past Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-1
6-2 while Latvia's Ernests Gulbis beat local favourite James Blake 6-4 1-6 6-3.
German Philipp Kohlschreiber also beat Sweden's Robin Soderling 7-6 5-7
7-6 having saved two match points.
