Mike Fratello Named Western Conference Coach of the Month for January Memphis, Tennessee, February 1, 2005— Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Mike Fratello earned his first coaching honor with the Grizzlies today when the NBA named him the Western Conference Coach of the Month for January. In January, Fratello led the Grizzlies to a 12-3 month, setting a franchise record for the most wins in January and earning a league-best 6-2 road record for the month . During the month , the Grizzlies shot season monthly-highs of .471 from the field and .411 from three-point range while averaging 96.2 ppg . In addition, the Grizzlies held opponents to monthly lows in points (87.0 ppg), rebounds (39.7 rpg) and blocked shots (4.93 bpg). The Grizzlies started the month of January two games below .500 with a 15-17 record and 12 wins later ended the month six games above .500 with a 26-20 record. On Jan. 6 @ Detroit, the Grizzlies earned just their second all-time win at the Palace with a 101-79 victory over the Pistons. On Jan. 15 vs. Milwaukee, the Grizzlies set a franchise mark for three-point field goals made with 13 , while setting a season-low with only six turnovers in the 101-82 win at FedExForum. This is Fratello’s fourth time being named an NBA Coach of the Month. Previous honors were with the Atlanta Hawks (January 1986) and twice with the Cleveland Cavaliers (December 1994, December 1995). This is the third coach of the month honor for the Memphis Grizzlies, with former head coach Hubie Brown earning the award twice last season in February and March 2004.
