Hantuchova, Sugiyama win doubles

DOHA: Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and partner Ai Sugiyama of Japan yesterday
overcame the setback of losing out in the singles category by winning the
doubles title at the Qatar Open 2006.
Hantuchova, who lost in the second round of the Qatar Open and Sugiyama in
semi-finals, joined hands to beat Chinese pair of Ti Ling and Tiantian Sun in
the doubles final at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex.
Hantuchova and Sugiyama won 6-4, 6-4 in one hour 35 minutes.
“We are delighted to have won here. It was a good effort by both of us after
we lost in the singles event. We are happy with the effort,” Hantuchova said
after the final. Exhibiting great understanding despite little experience of
playing together, Hantuchova and Sugiyama broke their opponents in games two,
five and seven to win the first set at 6-4. The Chinese pair broke their rivals
in games four and eight, but too many unforced errors didn’t help their cause.
