Someday Jason Kidd will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as one
of the greatest point guards in NBA history. But before he is enshrined, he
has made what is likely the final stop of his career, and perhaps an unlikely
one.

Kidd began what is almost certainly the last contract of his career in New
York on Friday, following his departure from Dallas after helping the
Mavericks win a title two years ago. He came to the Knicks, a team that he
tormented from across the river for years. And the ex-Net did it with a
different job: starting in the opener as a shooting guard, though he will
serve as a backup point guard, at shooting guard and at small forward.

Though that is a reflection of where he is in his career at 39 — as the

"I’ve always been a big believer that you’re a basketball player," Kidd
said. "So people label you as a point guard, a two guard, but if you know how

are going to benefit from Jason Kidd, I promise you that."

That showed up already in the Knicks season-opening victory, a one-sided win
over the defending champion Miami Heat. Kidd had 12 points, four rebounds,
three assists and two steals in 23 minutes, and the statistics don’t provide
the full picture of the impact he had on the game.

Though the Knicks knew just how good Kidd has been as an opponent, getting on
the floor as teammates for the first time showed them even more.
He’s "more valuable than I think [people realize]," Steve Novak said after
scoring 17 points in the season opener — more than he tallied in the Knicks
five-game playoff series against the Heat last season. "People are going to
continue to see."

The Knicks have the prime-of-their-career talent in Carmelo Anthony, Tyson

stay with the Knicks. But they spent the summer adding experienced — some
would say over the hill — pieces.
Though Marcus Camby was held out Friday and didn’t play a minute of the
exhibition schedule and Rasheed Wallace has spent the last month trying to
get into shape, Kidd never took a breather in the preseason. He wasn’t
brought in to serve as the starting point guard — Raymond Felton has taken
that job.
