He got his start as an NBA coach with the Knicks under Jeff Van Gundy in 2001. 身為一位道地的紐約客，MM說在MSG執教總是非常特別。他在2001年時做為JVG在尼克隊的助教，開始了NBA的執教生涯。 “I had four very crazy years here,” Malone said. “New York is a funny place. Just when you don’t think things can get any worse, they continue to get worse at times.
