Pablo Prigioni's play and attitude key for NY Knicks with injured Jason Kidd
missing time
Prigioni, 35, had a breakout performance in Wednesday’s 102-88 victory over
the Bucks in Milwaukee. With Kidd sidelined a second straight game with back
spasms, Prigioni scored 11 points with seven assists in 28 minutes off the
bench.

Nicholas Prigioni never asks his father how many minutes he played or how
many points Carmelo Anthony scored. The son of a point guard always asks the
only question that matters.
“Did we win?” Pablo Prigioni says. “That’s what he asks. If I say no, he
starts to cry.”
In many ways, 3-year-old Nicholas is very much like his father. Pablo
Prigioni, an Argentine who developed his game in the Spanish professional
league, always thinks team first. That’s his father’s philosophy, whether
Prigioni is the starting point guard for his national team or the NBA’s
oldest rookie adjusting to a new role as a Knicks third stringer behind
Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd.
“Some days it’s difficult because I want to play, I’m a competitive player,
” Prigioni said. “I want to be on the court. But we have great guards. I
have big players in front of me so nothing to say. ”
Prigioni, 35, had a breakout performance in Wednesday’s 102-88 victory over
the Bucks in Milwaukee. With Kidd sidelined a second straight game with back
spasms, Prigioni scored 11 points with seven assists in 28 minutes off the
bench.
He’ll be in the rotation on Friday against the 1-12 Washington Wizards even
if Kidd, who is listed as day-to-day, is available. Mike Woodson was
encouraged that Prigioni, a natural playmaker, played with more confidence
against the Bucks, especially after making his first two 3-pointers. He
converted four of five shots overall and with the Bucks forced to defend him
on the perimeter, Prigioni became more a probing guard in the mold of Steve
Nash. He set up Steve Novak for a pair of open threes and feed Tyson Chandler
for an alley-oop dunk.
“It’s nothing that was shocking,” Rasheed Wallace said. “Pablo is a great
point guard. We saw that with Argentina’s national team. He’s done it in
practice. He’s a good point guard that went through a bad stretch.”
Prigioni had the typical struggles for a player learning a new league. The
toughest adjustment has been going from playing 30 minutes a night to
averaging 14 minutes with the Knicks and recording a DNP last week in Dallas.
Prigioni knew what he was getting into when he signed a one-year contract in
July. He realized the cultural value that New York would mean to his family.
His daughter and son are learning English.
As for basketball, Prigioni was eager to play in the world’s top league. He
also had his fellow countrymen, Manu Ginobili, Carlos Delfino and Luis Scola,
prep him for life in the NBA. The night before the game in San Antonio, he
visited with Ginobili and did the same with Delfino in Houston. On Saturday,
he’ll spend time with Scola, the Suns power forward who is a longtime friend
and one-time teammate in Spain. The Suns face the Knicks on Sunday at the
Garden.
The message from Ginobili and Delfino was the same; stay ready and keep your
spirits up because your chance will come. They were comforting words from
friends but it wasn’t really necessary.
“I know, I know,” said Prigioni, sounding very much like the veteran he is.
“That’s the good thing to have 35 years old. You understand all situations.
Like I said two weeks ago, I will stay calm all the time…if I played good or
played bad or don’t play because there are so many games.
“No way I feel great now because maybe in two days I play terrible. So stay
calm when play good, stay calm when play bad because the next game is
important.”
