It's the unhappy topic that never gives the NBA a lasting peace. The hardest job in sports may be refereeing a pro basketball game -- a truism that only enhances the problem. It's hard because there are subjective decisions to be made on every possession of every game. To call a foul or not call a foul. To split a hair between the suspects when defense and offense collide. If you can sit back and watch your favorite team play an NBA game, and never once think your boys got robbed by an official, you're a candidate for sainthood. Either that or your tranquilizer prescription is too heavy. Fan aggravation hangs like a vague, sour aroma in every arena, ready to overpower any game at any time. Usually, we get all the way to maybe the second or third playoff game before an officiating controversy breaks out. This year, so far so good. The funny thing is that the Lakers and Oklahoma City have played three games without either team so much as referencing a single call by the officials, yet the issue won't leave the series alone because Phil Jackson made what he considered a frank assessment of Kevin Durant's game before it even began. Jackson said he thought the officials give Durant, the league scoring champ, free passes to the free-throw line. Which, of course, they do. Scorers get calls. Always have, always will. But when Boston's Kevin Garnett said it in March, he got fined. So it was no surprise when Jackson was taxed $35,000, too. Most people, of course, figured Jackson was making a pre-emptive strike, mind-gaming Durant and the officials for the postseason. Also correct. Unfortunately for the NBA, the man who hates this topic more than any other, Commissioner David Stern, managed to amp it up on his own before Game 3. He said if he could go back 20 years, he would have established suspensions for coaches, not "modest" fines, for criticizing officials. He said he would have started with Jackson and Pat Riley during a Chicago Bulls-New York Knicks series in the 1990s. Jackson (then in Chicago) remembered it well, saying he and New York's Riley were much worse calling out each other's stars than he was this time. 史坦指的就是90年代公牛跟尼克的系列賽 當時公牛的教練是禪師 尼克的教練是油頭 禪師說他也記得跟油頭互相說對方的球星得到太多的偏袒 "Pat said (Michael) Jordan got all the calls -- blatantly," said Jackson on Friday, smiling at the memory. "I said Patrick Ewing travels every time he goes to the basket." Jackson seemed more amused than threatened by Stern's peevishness. "(A suspension) seems awfully heavy-handed to me, but David isn't shy about being heavy-handed," said Jackson, who thinks the NBA got more sensitive to coaches' working refs through the media last spring, recalling fines to Stan Van Gundy and Rick Adelman. Asked if getting calls through the press really works, Jackson laughed and said, "I don't think it makes a difference. I know the referees take an eye test. I don't know if they take a reading test." But he did reiterate what everyone knows, that referees are human. He glanced up in the cavernous Ford Center and said, "It's about the energy in the building. They get 20,000 people in here." He said that's the home-court advantage: calls go in your favor. "People lean a certain way," he said, referring to the crowd's effect. "I think it can be statistically proven." It just so happened, of course, that in Game 3 home-town favorite Durant went to the free-throw line 13 times. Visiting star Kobe Bryant shot none -- a true rarity. 禪師說的昨天才發生過 雷霆主場的最愛KD站上罰球線13次 而來訪的Kobe連一次也沒有 這很罕見 "It's a natural evolution of who gets the ball the most, and they'll end up at the foul line," said Jackson. "Unfortunately, it didn't work for Kobe, but it did for Kevin. You have to swallow it and move on." In the NBA, there will always be a next time. Fans see. Coaches talk. And no commissioner will ever make the issue go away.
