He’s seen a steady ascent within the farm system in the two and a half years since. His most notable claim in his time with the club was being invited to last season’s All-Star Game and Home Run Derby. He is extremely aggressive at the plate and chases a lot of pitches down in the zone. There has been improvement in his vision, but the mechanics of his swing naturally make it difficult for him to cover parts of the zone. Standing very upright, he has a hitch at the top of his swing that limits his ability to adjust. Striking out over 100 times in the past two seasons, he regularly struggles with balls breaking down out of the zone and heat on the inside. The flip side is that his swing allows for strong power. Chang finished 2016 with over 50 extra base hits and 70 RBIs from the shortstop position. He offers playable range on an average arm, making it difficult for him to play from the hole. The club has experimented with him at third base, though second base may be a future destination for him. At the moment he sees limited opportunity at shortstop because of Francisco Lindor. The club will be looking for a potential utility option, but he will need to display more versatility before that is a real consideration.
