Mental mistakes lead to Marlins' third straight loss

CINCINNATI — The embarrassment set in too late Wednesday for the Marlins.
Trailing 6-0 in the top of the ninth because of their shoddy play for the
first eight innings, the Marlins staged a historic comeback by scoring six
runs to force extra innings.

field, where center fielder Corey Patterson overan the ball.

stopped and flipped his bat, admiring what he thought was a home run. The
ball, however, hit off the wall, and Ramirez broke into a sprint, barely

The Marlins handed the Reds three more runs in the seventh. After Griffey
doubled to score Hairston, Brandon Phillips hit a bouncer to third base, but
Cantu's throw sailed into the stands.

Phillips took second on Cantu's error, advanced to third on Votto's

to make it 6-0.

In the top of the ninth, the Marlins' stunning rally began with singles by
Cantu and Uggla, followed by a double by Gonzalez, scoring Cantu.

The Marlins loaded the bases for Treanor, who singled home two more runs off

In the 10th, Pinto struck out the first two batters, then walked David Ross
and Paul Bako on eight consecutive balls. Pinto then got two quick strikes on
Janish before the rookie's game-winning hit to right.

"We definitely didn't play the type of baseball we are capable of playing,''
Ross said.
