Marlins come back but can't hold on
Late power keeps Fish alive but not enough for victory

OAKLAND -- The Marlins tacked on four more home runs, increasing their Major
League-leading total to 110. Yet the long ball wasn't enough to carry the
Marlins.

Eric Chavez opened the 11th with a two-base error, on a ball that left fielder
Luis Gonzalez couldn't handle at the wall. Jack Hannahan pinch-ran for Chavez,
and he scored on Suzuki's double to right off reliever Doug Waechter.

As they've done all season, the Marlins have relied on the long ball to come
back. Uggla's second shot of the night came with one out in the ninth inning, a

The Marlins and A's entered the game with identical records.
In the eighth inning, Hermida's two-out, two-run shot off Street gave the
Marlins a 5-4 lead. It was Hermida's first home run since May 25 against the
Giants. Ramirez added a solo shot in the seventh inning.

1-2 pitch, Suzuki doubled to center. At the time, the extra-base hit gave the
A's a 6-5 advantage.
