Four Marlins relievers combined to throw the final 3 2/3 scoreless innings of Sunday's 1-0, series-clinching shutout of the Nationals at Sun Life Stadium. The Marlins have won three of four, all via shutout thanks in large part of a relief staff that's tossed 20 consecutive scoreless innings. Earlier this season Marlins fans gladly would have padlocked the bullpen gate and flushed the key. Now every reliever trots in as if riding a white steed. "I think we're just attacking hitters better than we were in the past," said Brian Sanches, who entered with one on and one out in the sixth and struck out Josh Willingham and Roger Bernadina. "I haven't looked at the stats, but I'm guessing there are a lot less walks and getting ahead of guys." Sanches is correct. Since June 25 the bullpen has issued 2.4 walks per nine innings. From Opening Day through June 24 the figure was 4.7 per nine. The Marlins have 16 holds over their last 15 games. That's one less than they totaled over 40 games from May 15-June 27. Sunday's effort came in support of rookie Alex Sanabia, who allowed four hits over 5 1/3 innings and earned his first major league win. He was earmarked for 80 pitches and departed after retiring Adam Dunn on his 78th. Sanabia and the bullpen held the Nationals hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. They went 1 for 23 with RISP in the series and were blanked in every inning save for a four-run sixth on Friday. "You could tell he was a little bit nervous out there, but he seems like he was comfortable pitching uncomfortable," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "He made pitches when he had to. It was a good outing and a good win." The Marlins had enjoyed good success against Nationals starter Craig Stammen, who through four career outings against them was 0-1 with a 6.11 ERA.
