DALLAS -- After trading down twice, the Mavericks acquired Miami point guard Shane Larkin with the 18th overall pick. The Atlanta Hawks technically drafted Larkin, but he will be the Mavs’ property after the trade for the No. 16 overall pick becomes official. The 6-foot, 171-pound Larkin averaged 14.5 points, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals as a sophomore for Miami. He was the ACC player of the year. It appears that the Mavs intend to keep Larkin, at least for now. If the Mavs need to create cap space to sign Dwight Howard, Larkin could be traded in July. Larkin, the son of Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin, is a quick, explosive player who is skilled at running the pick-and-roll. He was measured with a 44-inch vertical leap at the NBA combine and averaged the sixth-most points as a pick-and-roll ballhandler (6.4) in the NCAA last season. Larkin is also an effective perimeter shooter (40.6 percent from 3-point range in 2012-13). By moving down from the 13th pick to the 18th, the Mavs created $374,500 in cap space. Dumping 2012 first-round pick Jared Cunningham in the trade with Atlanta created another $718,220 in cap space (his 2013-14 salary minus a roster cap hold).
