Tuesday, June 24, 2003
Martin Verkerk, the Dutchman who was a surprise finalist at Roland Garros
earlier this month, was beaten in the first round by the 18-year-old Swedish
qualifier Robin Soderling.
Soderling, playing his Wimbledon debut on Court 18, overcame the 21st seed
Verkerk, 6-3 6-4 6-7 (7-5), 6-1 in just over two hours.
Neither player has significant experience on grass but Soderling looked
entirely comfortable as he powered to a lead of two sets to love in just
under an hour, serving his fifth ace to take the second set.
At the end of the second set Verkerk received attention to his right knee.
Despite this, and finding himself 0-40 on serve in the third game of the third
set, the Dutchman, who was the first player from the Netherlands to reach the
French Open final, soon recovered to lead all the way through the set and event
ually take the tiebreak by seven points to five.
Unfazed, Soderling set the precedent early on in the fourth set and dominated
throughout for a 6-1 result and a place in the second round.
