Clijsters Makes Successful Return in Antwerp
ANTWERP, Belgium - After months of rehabilitation, Kim Clijsters is ready to
get back to action on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
Clijsters took the court for the first time since October on Tuesday at the
Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp - where she is the defending champion - and
walked away with a victory, defeating Croatia's Jelena Kostanic, 62 63.
From almost the start of the 2004 season, Clijsters had to battle problems
with her left wrist - an injury that would require surgery on June 12 and
force her to miss most of the season.
She made a brief comeback after surgery in October at Hasselt, but retired in
the semifinals after reaggravating the injury.
Clijsters will face her toughest on-court challenge in months in the next
round when she faces No.5 seed Nadia Petrova, a 64 61 winner against Anabel
Medina Garrigues on Tuesday.
Three out of four qualifiers in first round action were able to find their
way into the second round, including Russia's Anna Chakvetadze, who upset
No.8 seed Karolina Sprem, 75 63.
But Sprem wasn't the only seeded player to fall on Day 2, as No.6 seed
Nathalie Dechy wasn't able to escape the first round, falling to Klara
Koukalova, 76(7) 64.
Also advancing were qualifiers Camille Pin, a 61 62 winner against Marta
Marrero and Katarina Srebotnik, who came back from a set down to defeat Maria
Elena Camerin.
Meanwhile, the fourth qualifier in the main draw, Ana Ivanovic, put up a
three-set battle with wild card Virginie Razzano before falling to the
Frenchwoman, 63 26 63.
In other action, Mary Pierce advanced to the second round with a straight
sets victory against Iveta Benesova and will now face top seed Amelie
Mauresmo in the second round for the second straight week. Pierce also faced
Mauresmo in the round of 16 last week at Paris [Indoors], a match that she
lost in straight sets.
