Championships Preview
November 04, 2003
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA - The race is over. Eight players have played their
hearts out all year to earn berths at the prestigious season-ending Bank of
America WTA Championships presented by Porsche.
And it all comes down to the last week of the season. As the world's
top-ranked players assemble this week at STAPLES Center, 5-10 November,
one question persists - Who will take the million dollars? This year’s
$3,000,000 WTA Tour Championships features a new format that involves
eight players competing in a round robin singles format that pays the winner
a record-tying $1 million, equaling the largest winner’s cheque in women’s
sports.
Also at stake is the No.1 ranking. Belgian superstars Kim Clijsters and
Justine Henin-Hardenne have both tasted No.1 status this year. Defending
champion Clijsters is the current No.1, but Henin-Hardenne could take over as
she is only 135 ranking points behind her compatriot.
On Sunday, Chanda Rubin became the last player to qualify for the elite eight.
She joins the field that includes Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne, Jennifer
Capriati, Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Dementieva, Anastasia Myskina and Ai Sugiyama.
The Williams sisters and Lindsay Davenport also qualified for the
Championships but withdrew due to injuries.
The eight singles players have been divided into two pools:
RED GROUP: Clijsters, Mauresmo, Dementieva, Rubin
BLACK GROUP: Henin-Hardenne, Capriati, Myskina, Sugiyama
From Wednesday through Saturday, round robin matches will take place in each
pool, with the Top 2 players from each group advancing to the knock-out
semifinals.
The doubles competition features four teams—
Virginia Ruano Pascual / Paola Suarez (who reached all four major finals this
year);
Kim Clijsters / Ai Sugiyama (Roland Garros and Wimbledon champs);
Svetlana Kuznetsova / Martina Navratilova (playing her first Championships
since 1994);
Cara Black / Elena Likhovtseva (runners-up the past two years).
Unlike the singles event, the doubles competition is a knock-out affair,
starting at the semifinal stage.
