The Top Eight...How They Got Here
November 04, 2003
Kim Clijsters - Eight singles titles in 14 finals (the most finals played in
one year since Steffi Graf in 1993)
brought Clijsters to the No.1 ranking for the first time on
11 August. Runner-up at Roland Garros and the US Open to
Justine Henin-Hardenne, the 20-year-old has to win the title
and see her compatriot fall early to prevent from her being
the year-end No.1.
Justine Henin-Hardenne - Fewer finals than Clijsters (11), but her eight
titles comprised two majors (Roland Garros and US Open) and
four Tier Is (Charleston, Berlin, Toronto, Zurich).
The 21-year-old reached No.1 for the first time on 20 October
and will finish year-end No.1 by reaching the semifinals or
if Clijsters doesn’t defend her title.
Jennifer Capriati - At New Haven, the world No.5 won her first title since the
2002 Australian Open and missed out on a shot at her fourth
major a fortnight later, coming within two points of beating
eventual champion Henin-Hardenne 10 times in that memorable US
Open semifinal. Runner-up at Miami and Stanford and a
semifinalist another six times.
Amelie Mauresmo - Winner of two titles (Warsaw and last week in Philadelphia),
runner-up at Paris [Indoors], Rome and Moscow and a
semifinaist at Dubai, Berlin and New Haven.
Elena Dementieva - Captured her first three Tour singles titles at Amelia
Island, Bali and Shanghai (the last two in successive weeks),
the Russian was also a semifinalist at Paris [Indoors],
Toronto, New Haven and on home soil in Moscow.
Anastasia Myskina - Winner of four titles in five finals, with three of those
finals appearances occurring indoors post-US Open—Leipzig,
Moscow (winning both in successive weeks) and last week in
Philadelphia.
Ai Sugiyama - Winner of two Tier II titles (Scottsdale, Linz) and a narrow
semifinal loss to Mauresmo in Philadelphia last week has the
28-year-old less than 100 points from the Top 10.
Chanda Rubin - Winner of Madrid and Eastbourne and threetime runner-up
(Bali, Shanghai and Luxembourg, all post-US Open).
