A torn tendon sheath in that same wrist required surgery in 2008 and limited him to 38 games for Washington, but it was unclear whether Johnson had injured the same tendon. Even before receiving the results of the M.R.I. test, the Yankees anticipated losing him for a while, and they recalled the utility player Kevin Russo from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. After Friday’s game, Johnson said that his wrist had been bothering him for a bit but that he lost strength in it while taking a swing in the first inning. He stayed in for another at-bat, then was replaced at designated hitter in the fifth. Johnson received an injection of anti-inflammatory medication and will remain in New York for treatment by the head trainer Gene Monahan. “I really don’t have an idea at all,” Manager Joe Girardi said when asked how much time Johnson was expected to miss. Johnson’s .388 on-base percentage could not conceal his struggles at the plate, where he batted .138 in April. The Yankees had been considering dropping him from the No. 2 spot in the lineup, and now they have no choice. Brett Gardner slid into that role Saturday, but Girardi indicated before the game that Nick Swisher could expect to hit there more regularly. “It’s easier for him to run more down further in the lineup,” Girardi said of Gardner. In Johnson’s absence, the Yankees do not plan to use a regular designated hitter. Marcus Thames should assume the bulk of those duties, but Girardi will also use that role to rotate in Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Jorge Posada and other veterans. Posada was held out of the lineup for a fourth straight game, but he said that his strained right calf muscle felt much better and that Girardi did not listen to his pleas to play Saturday. “Yeah, it didn’t work out,” said Posada, who expects to serve as the designated hitter Sunday night and then catch Monday in Detroit. With their infield options limited, the Yankees found Russo’s versatility appealing. Already this season, Russo, who was batting .302, has played five positions for Scranton — second base, shortstop, third base, center field and right field. He said he learned of his call-up around 11 p.m. Friday and flew to Boston from North Carolina, where Scranton was playing in Durham, on Saturday morning.
