Although Anthony Carter is projected to be a backup point guard next season for the Nuggets, he is confident he will have a fair shot at being the starter. Carter said in a phone interview Wednesday that the Nuggets are planning on exercising his one-year contract next season paying $1.1 million. The 8-year NBA veteran said Nuggets coach George Karl told him he'd have a chance to compete with Atkins to start at the point. "I'm coming to training camp like it's anybody's job," Carter said. "I won't come in thinking it's (Atkins'). If I get it, I think he'll support me. If he gets it, I'll support him. We can play together and support each other. I've never been a hater." Carter averaged 4.7 points and 3.7 assists while playing with Miami, San Antonio and Minnesota from 1999-2006. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder played in two games at the end of the regular season for Denver and in one playoff game. Atkins officially signed a two-year guaranteed deal Monday. "Starting is a big deal for young guys," said Atkins, in a phone interview. "For me, I could care less." Carter said he has been working out primarily in his offseason home of San Antonio and plans on arriving in Denver to prepare for next season in early September. He also said he visited with Nuggets assistant Tim Grgurich in Las Vegas recently and that Grgurich plans on visiting him in San Antonio soon. Melo weighs in Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony on Atkins: "Chucky is a good 3-point shooter. That's one of the main reasons that I like him so much. That's an area that we need a lot of improvement. He will be a good fit." On Atkins saying the Nuggets are a championship contender, Anthony said: "I am glad he said that, because I only want to play with people that want to win a championship. As long as we are all healthy and we continue to focus on our defense as we did in the second half of last season, we have a good chance at a ring." Footnote Nuggets free-agent forward/center Jamal Sampson said via text message: "(The Nuggets) are interested in bringing me back and they said they would stay in contact."
