[新聞] Restructuring of O's under way
From http://0rz.tw/903wv
The Orioles are at a bit of a crossroads, which is strange for a team that
hasn't had a winning record since 1997. Andy MacPhail, the team's president of
baseball operations, is committed to a full rebuild of his roster, which first
necessitates a dismantling of the parts on-hand. So far, that process has just
begun.
MacPhail got the work started by trading four-time All-Star Miguel Tejada to
Houston, and the return is emblematic of what he'd like to do with some of his
other veterans. In exchange for Tejada's services, Baltimore obtained young
pitchers Troy Patton, Matt Albers and Dennis Sarfate in addition to outfielder
Luke Scott and third baseman Mike Costanzo.
Only two players from that mix -- Patton and Scott -- are expected to play a
role on Opening Day, but Albers and Sarfate could easily land roles in
Baltimore's all-but-vacant bullpen. The Orioles are hoping for a similarly
talented package for former cornerstones Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts, two of
the hottest commodities in the trading market.
Bedard is under contractual control for two more seasons, but there's a feeling
within the organization that his value is at its peak right now and that he can
best help the team by bringing back a diverse group of talented players.
Roberts, meanwhile, is coming off his second All-Star season and may not want
to re-sign with the Orioles after 2009.
Baltimore may also look to move veterans Melvin Mora, Kevin Millar and Jay
Payton, all of whom may work best as supplementary pieces in a bigger deal. The
Orioles have finally decided that they're not a quick fix or two away from
contention, which has freed them up to ignore the free-agent market and try to
get younger and less expensive.
The re-shaped Orioles are likely to build around right fielder Nick Markakis,
southpaw starter Adam Loewen and hopes that recent first-round draft picks
Billy Rowell and Matt Wieters successfully make it through the system intact.
The team will be less recognizable and may finish in fifth place next season,
but that may help brighten the prospects for 2009.
Grading on a curve:
The Orioles have sought out offers for quite a few of their prime movable
pieces, but so far Tejada is the only veteran who has actually changed teams.
Baltimore is likely to move Roberts and Bedard before Opening Day, and those
two players are expected to bring back a haul of young prospects who will
change the face of the franchise. Just by moving Tejada, the Orioles guaranteed
that they'll have a new energy on the field and in the clubhouse. That might
not qualify as an entire makeover, but on a scale of one to 10, Baltimore
deserves a four at this point.
Arrivals:
LHP Patton, LHP Albers, LF Scott, RHP Sarfate, 3B Costanzo, C Guillermo Quiroz.
Departures:
CF Corey Patterson, SS Tejada, RHP Jaret Wright, RHP Kris Benson, C Paul Bako.
The Road Ahead:
The Orioles still have a lot of work to do and could be active all the way into
Spring Training. Baltimore is proceeding with a full facelift, tacitly
admitting that this team as presently constructed is a long way away from
contention. That's something the previous regimes have been hesitant to admit,
and now that the full rebuild is under way, there's less pressure to
immediately stem the team's streak of 10 consecutive losing seasons.
