From:http://tinyurl.com/yoc8rf --------------------------------------------------------------------- Bynum to have knee surgery O's infield depth depleted as utility man likely out until mid-April FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Utility man Freddie Bynum has decided today to have arthroscopic surgery to repair a slight tear in the meniscus in his right knee, an injury that will likely keep him out until mid-April and further erodes the Orioles' depth, specifically in the infield. "I'm going to get it taken care of so I won't miss that much of the season," said Bynum, who hit .260 for the Orioles last season with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 70 games. "It wasn't about the 25-man roster or anything. I was just thinking about my career, trying to be healthy and do the things that I know that I can do that my knee won't let me do right now." Bynum is expected to have the surgery performed in Baltimore at some point next week. He'll likely be shut down from baseball activities for three weeks. That, coupled with a likely rehabilitation stint at the club's minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla., is expected to keep him out until the third week of the season. "Yesterday he went through some light exercises, he walked on the treadmill and did some other things, and today he's sore, which is not a good sign for him," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "He asked me what I thought and I told him. I think he's going to talk to [head athletic trainer Richie Bancells] this afternoon and I think he's leaning toward getting this thing taken care of." Bynum, who will turn 28 next week, was a candidate for the Orioles' starting shortstop job and his versatility -- he also can play in the outfield -- made him one of the front-runners to win a utility spot on the club. Scott Moore, another utility candidate, has a groin strain and probably won't be available to play again until the middle of next week at the earliest.
