Hornets to turn attention to GM post
Assistant Bristow is likely front-runner

Now that the Hornets have settled on a coach, the next task is to
hire the coach's boss -- a general manager.
And time is of the essence: Ideally, the team would like to have
that person in place before Bob Bass retires in 32 days.
Bass, the executive vice president of basketball operations and
general manager, announced his retirement earlier this month.
Since then, the franchise mainly has concentrated on finding a
coach to replace Tim Floyd, fired May 7 after a 41-41 season that
ended with the Hornets losing in the first round of the playoffs.
With help from Allan Bristow, the assistant general manager, Bass
has continued to run front-office operations, focusing on not only
the search for a coach, but prospects in the June 24 draft.
On Thursday, the Hornets worked out former Duke star Chris Duhon,
who prepped at Salmen. Duhon is projected as a late first-round or
early second-round selection.
Bass and Bristow had evaluated more than a dozen prospects as of
Thursday. More are expected to report for workouts Tuesday.
So far, Bristow appears to be the top candidate for the general
manager post, but he hasn't been interviewed. Brian Hill, an
assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets who interviewed for head
coach, also is a possible front office candidate. But whomever is
hired for the job likely will take on only general manager's duties,
while another person will be hired as director of basketball
operations, a team source said.
"We've been so busy with our players, it has just been hectic with
our scheduling," Bristow said Thursday. "We've had 16 players in this
week (for pre-draft workouts), and we've got more in the next week.
Then we go to (the) Chicago (pre-draft camp). It's going to be tough
fitting in a lot of things and having the time right now."
In the early 1990s, Bristow was vice president of basketball
operations for the Hornets. He became head coach in 1992, staying in
that job until 1996 and compiling a 207-203 record -- the second-best
record in franchise history after Paul Silas. In 1996, Bristow left
the Hornets to become vice president of basketball operations for the
Denver Nuggets. He returned to the Hornets as an assistant general
manager last year.
