Whomever is hired likely will become head of basketball operations while Allan Bristow will be named general manager, and assistant coach Jeff Bower will be named assistant general manager. The trio will form a committee that will oversee the Hornets' personnel operations, currently managed by executive vice president of basketball operations and General Manager Bob Bass, sources said. Bass is retiring June 30. Hornets owner George Shinn has looked at a number of big names to bring into the front office -- Drexler and Reed were chosen two of the league's 50 Greatest Players in 1996. Reed, a native of Bernice, and Lanier are members of the Basketball Hall of Fame, and Drexler will soon be enshrined. Of the three candidates, Reed has the most experience in personnel matters. He was general manager/vice president of basketball operations for the New Jersey Nets from 1988-1996 before becoming Nets senior vice president in 1996, a position he held during the coaching tenure of new Hornets coach Byron Scott. Reed was the executive who identified Hornets forward P.J. Brown as a pro prospect when Brown came out of Louisiana Tech, sending Brown to play in Greece for a year before Brown joined the Nets in 1993. Lanier has worked in various capacities for the NBA in recent years and is special assistant to the commissioner and chairman of the NBA Team-Up Program. Drexler, who was born in New Orleans before moving to Texas as a youngster, was head coach at the University of Houston from 1998 to 2000, an assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets in 2002 and special assistant to the general manager with the Nuggets in 2001. . . . . . . .
