Hornets high on Claxton
'Speedy' expected to be excellent backcourt pickup

Spending a longer and obviously more eventful than usual
Thursday maneuvering players and their attached price tags,
Hornets general manager Allan Bristow took a needed breath
and evaluated what's new for the here and now.
Basically, that's Speedy Claxton.
Despite acquiring the rights to three players -- Claxton,
Dale Davis and Glenn Robinson -- the young but journeyman
point guard obtained in a three-player trade from Golden
State is the only definite addition guaranteed to see the
court (as a member of the Hornets, at least). Robinson
remains on the injured list because of left ankle tendinitis
that has prevented him from playing all season. And although
Davis is part of the Hornets' active roster, Bristow said
the organization intends to spend the next
week determining the veteran's immediate future.
"Speedy was a key," Bristow said. "He was such a key. Golden
State did not want to part with him, and we were not going to
make this deal with Golden State unless Speedy Claxton was
the main part of the deal. We get a young player that we've
all -- coaching staff, management, personnel -- we've had
him targeted for a long, long time."
Drafted 20th overall by the 76ers in 2000, after almost
single-handedly leading Hofstra into the NCAA Tournament,
Claxton missed his entire rookie season because of a torn
left ACL.
Brief stops in Philadelphia and San Antonio brought Claxton
to Golden State through free agency in 2003. After splitting
starts his first year with Nick Van Exel, Claxton won the
point guard spot from Derek Fisher this season, and his 6.2
assists and 1.89 steals per game rank among the top 15 in
the league.
Claxton joins early season addition Dan Dickau as the Hornets'
only true point guards left following trades of Baron Davis
and Darrell Armstrong.
"To me, Dan is going to be one of those players where some
nights he can play 35 minutes and I think some nights Speedy
can play 35 minutes," Bristow said. "We still got a little
bit of time to really evaluate that situation."
It's unlikely Robinson, who's on his third team in three
years after a tenuous eight-season relationship with the
Bucks fizzled in 2002, will come to New Orleans. He has
rehabbed in Philadelphia all season, and Bristow was unsure
of logistical matters concerning his continued treatment.
In 2003-04 -- an abbreviated season in Philadelphia --
Robinson, 32, averaged 16.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game
-- both substantially off from his career averages.
Dale Davis, 35, actually shares a bit of playing history with
Hornets coach Byron Scott (both were teammates in Indiana for
two seasons in the mid-1990s). Like Robinson, Davis' numbers
have dipped dramatically since he helped the Pacers reach the
NBA Finals in 2000.
這次交易來的三個球員中 只有 Speedy會在球隊未來的藍圖裡
. . . . . . .
