[新聞] Whitey Herzog elected to Hall of Fame
INDIANAPOLIS | Former manager Whitey Herzog, who guided the Royals to three
division titles in the late 1970s, is headed to the Hall of Fame, but his
ex-boss, the late Ewing Kauffman, failed to gain election.
Herzog learned of his honor Monday morning when the Hall of Fame announced
the voting results at the winter meetings. He is one of two inductees from a
field of 10 finalists considered by the Veterans Committee for Managers and
Umpires.
Umpire Doug Harvey was also elected.
Kauffman failed to gain the necessary support for election by the Veterans
Committee for Executives and Pioneers. No candidate received the necessary
from the field of 10 finalists.
Herzog and Harvey will be inducted along with any players elected through the
writers’ ballot at a July 25 ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America continues through
Dec. 31. Results will be announced Jan. 6.
Herzog, 78, managed 18 years in the big leagues for with short tours with the
Rangers and Angles before replacing Jack McKeon as Royals manager midway
through the 1975 season.
The Royals went 41-25 under Herzog in 1975 before winning American League
West Division titles in 1976, 1977 and 1978. They lost each season in the AL
Championship Series to the New York Yankees.
Herzog was fired after the Royals slipped to second place in 1979 but
resurfaced midway through the following season at St. Louis. He guided the
Cardinals to three National League pennants and the 1982 World Series crown
in his 11 seasons.
But Herzog’s Cardinals lost the 1985 World Series to the Royals in seven
games.
The Royals inducted Herzog into their Hall of Fame in 2000. His 410 victories
remain the most by any manager in franchise history.
