Mike Moustakas set a blistering pace in May. The 21-year-old third baseman hit .393/.486/.775 with nine home runs, seven doubles, and 32 RBIs in 89 at bats during the month. He had 11 multi-hit games in May, and he hit safely in the month’s first six games. From May 15 through May 24, he compiled a 10-game hitting streak, which included six straight multi-hit games. During that stretch, Moustakas hit an incredible .459 (17-for-37) with six home runs and 20 RBIs. His month was cut short, however, after suffering a minor knee injury in the Naturals’ game on May 27. He chased a foul ball into foul territory and banged his knee on the barrier wall, forcing him to miss the final four games of the month. On the season, Moustakas is hitting .374/.459/.764 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs in 123 at bats. Despite missing over two weeks of the season (including the Naturals’ first 12 games), he leads the Texas League in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and RBIs, and he ranks second in the circuit in home runs and runs scored. Moustakas will add his Player of the Month award to a growing collection of Texas League hardware. He has already twice this season been named as the league’s Player of the Week. This is, however, the first time he has ever been named as a league’s player of the month. Moustakas was the Royals’ first round selection (and second overall) in the 2007 draft. He played the entire 2009 season with the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks, hitting .250/.297/.421 with 16 home runs and 86 RBIs in 492 at bats.
