2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 14 Mik …
Mike Montgomery, LHP
2010 Rank: 43
Drafted: 2008, 1st (36)
ETA in Majors: 2012
Statistically speaking:
There are many impressive numbers this lefty has put up to date, including
his 2.27 career ERA. But none stand out more than the number seven.
That's how many, or how few, home runs Montgomery has allowed in his Minor
League career, over 245 2/3 innings, giving him a HR/9 rate of 0.3.
By comparison, Josh Johnson led the NL with a 0.343 rate in 2010 and
Francisco Liriano topped the AL at 0.423.
Scouting report:
Far from your finesse lefty, Montogmery has excellent stuff and size to
go with his pitchability. He brings a plus fastball and curve to the table
and his changeup should be a plus offering when all is said and done.
He gets high marks for his work ethic and his competitive nature. The only
thing that held him back was a forearm strain in 2010 and he's yet to throw
more than 110 innings in a season.
Upside potential:
One of the top left-handed starters in the big leagues.
They said it: "He had a very good year and he has huge upside. He's
progressing really well. His stuff is electric when he's on. I'm looking
forward to this coming year to see where it takes him." -- Braves general
manager Frank Wren
He said it: "I've been working on the 'little things,' including mechanics
and a strong mental approach."
