2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 37 Jak …
Jake Odorizzi, RHP
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2008, 1st (32)
ETA in Majors: 2013
Statistically speaking:
Pitching in full-season ball for the first time, Odorizzi finished ninth
in the Midwest League in ERA (3.43), sixth in strikeouts (135) and fourth
in WHIP while opposing hitters managed a .220 batting average against him.
He finished third in the Brewers organization in ERA and strikeouts.
Scouting report:
A key arm the Royals got in the Zack Greinke deal, Odorizzi throws a good
fastball up to 95 mph, and pitches at 91-93 comfortably. It comes with plenty
of sink. He complements it with an outstanding curve, which is inconsistent,
but shows as a plus pitch at times. He even has a slider, which was an
above-average to plus pitch at times. His changeup is an average offering
right now. He needs to find more consistency with his stuff and command,
but his combination of four pitches, feel for pitching and makeup have
scouts very excited.
Upside potential:
He has the chance to be at least a very good No. 2 starter and could
be in the future what Greinke is now.
They said it: "We're very excited to have him in our organization. He gives
us more pitching depth at the lower levels. Given the left-handed pitchers we
have, it's nice to add another good right-hander as well." -- J.J. Picollo,
Royals Assistant GM/Scouting and Player Development
He said it: "Everything was working. Everything clicked. I could throw
anything in any count. It's nice to have that when it comes around." -- after
throwing eight innings of nearly perfect baseball in a combined no-hitter
last August
