McEnroe to Lead 2007 Campaign that Begins February 9-11 against the Czech
Republic
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The USTA today announced that Patrick McEnroe will
continue as United States Davis Cup Captain through 2008. During his tenure
as captain, McEnroe has compiled a 9-6 record, leading the team to the Davis
Cup Finals in 2004, and two semifinal appearances in 2002 and last month
against Russia. McEnroe has consistently fielded the top American players
on the U.S. Davis Cup squads.
“We are thrilled that Patrick McEnroe will continue as U.S. Davis Cup Captain
for the next two years,” said Franklin Johnson, USTA Chairman of the Board and
President. “He brings a variety of talents to the Davis Cup both on and off
the court.”
“Over the last few years, Patrick McEnroe has reignited our Davis Cup effort,
and has built the steady support of our top players during his time as Captain,”
said Arlen Kantarian, Chief Executive, Pro Tennis, USTA. “With Patrick at the
helm, our remaining goal is clear – to return the Davis Cup to the United
States.”
“I would like to thank the USTA for their continued support as we try to
accomplish what will be a very challenging and exciting task,” said McEnroe. “We cannot reach our ultimate goal without the support of our top players, all of whom have shown that Davis Cup is a major priority for them.”
The 2007 U.S. Davis Cup campaign will begin February 9-11 in the Czech
Republic.
McEnroe, 40, is the 38th U.S. Davis Cup Captain since the competition began in
1900. He debuted as the U.S. Davis Cup Captain in 2001, succeeding his brother,
John. As a player, McEnroe competed for the United States in Davis Cup in 1993,
1994 and 1996, posting a 3-1 record in doubles. A 1988 graduate of Stanford
University, McEnroe also serves as a TV commentator for CBS Sports and ESPN.
He also coached the U.S. Olympic men’s tennis team in Athens in 2004.
In addition to his Davis Cup duties, McEnroe will serve in an advisory capacity
to the USTA Player Development Program.
AIG is the official sponsor of the U.S. Davis Cup Team. Wilson is the official
ball of the U.S. Davis Cup Team.
