Now that the dust of the 2005-06 season has more than cleared for the Utah Jazz, it is proper time for the analyzing to begin. Here are a few questions to ponder: Was it a successful season? What were the bright spots? What were the challenges? It obviously depends on who you ask. Most Jazz fans should be ecstatic with Utah's 15-game improvement. On the other hand, some will dwell on a third consecutive trip to the NBA Lottery. While expectations tend to get higher as a team tastes some success, people need to be realistic with both preseason prognostications and how the season ended. Most anticipated 32-38 wins and they finished with 41. The Playoffs would have been a fabulous accomplishment, but such an improvement is an excellent sign that the rebuilding is not only going well, but may be completed sooner than later. Take away the injuries and add a few pieces here and there and it is not that difficult to picture Jerry Sloan's squad qualifying for postseason play in 2007. Deron Williams: While so many critics point at the immense success that Chris Paul (not to mention Charlotte's Raymond Felton) had, Deron Williams proved to be an extremely capable floor general with a very bright future. While he underwent a spell where his playing time was inconsistent and he was being used primarily at the shooting guard position, he overcame those obstacles to finish out the season quite nicely. Toward the stretch run, he played with the saavy, intensity, and leadership of a seasoned veteran. His passing and outside shooting really blossomed in March and April and he subsequently gained a better understanding of what Sloan and the coaching staff expects of him. Many knew he was capable of great things, but most doubted that he could sustain it over the course of an entire season. Well detractors, sustain he did. The Turkish forward/center was easily Utah's most versatile scorer, using his deft outside touch to open up his inside game. He proved to be strong on the boards, finishing 14th in the NBA. He also displayed a fine passing touch, especially for a big man. Not to take anything away from Ben Wallace and Bruce Bowen, but Kirilenko's defense is so frenetic and constant that it causes opposing coaches to alter their game plans more than any other player. Averaging 3.19 blocks and 1.48 steals per game is quite the feat, but don't be surprised if he ups those totals next season. Simply put, that is a scary thought. The Playoff push: As Sloan buckled down and shortened his rotation, Utah began seeing some consistent success. By granting his five best players extended minutes, they produced fantastic numbers and impressive victories. In fact, they would have been on pace for 50 victories. While such conjecturing is often unrealistic, it is still quite fun! Karl Malone's number retirement: Although this obviously had nothing to do with Utah??s on the court performance, it was a fitting tribute for one of the greatest players to ever lace them up. One can also mention the amount of time it took for the aforementioned to work their way back into playing shape and prowess. Sloan should be credited with his overall patience with the youngsters. Off-court problems: The year was marred by many odd and disrupting episodes. Owner Larry H. Miller's two public tirades and his extended absence from the team caused for some awkward moments. Whaley and Williams' run-in with the law following a bar fight became the butt of numerous jokes, as they ironically assumed false identities to protect their images. Whaley then lied about the cut he sustained during the brawl. Greg Ostertag had his yearly run-in with Sloan, providing some mid-season entertainment. Boozer's reputation took numerous public hits and trade rumors followed him and Harpring up until the deadline passed. A few players, Kirilenko included, made public statements about their role--or lack thereof--in the offense. Jerry Sloan seems rejuvenated, and openly looks forward to next season.
