After his sorry 2-for-15, zero-RBI performance in the Division Series, Alex
Rodriguez said he was sorry.
According to third-base coach Luis Sojo, the MVP-candidate third baseman was
inconsolable after the Yankees' elimination loss on Monday night, a game in
which A-Rod was hitless and defused a ninth-inning rally with a double-play
grounder after a leadoff single by Derek Jeter.
Sojo described a visibly shaken Rodriguez in the visitors' clubhouse in
Anaheim.
"He went into the coaches' room to say he was sorry. He felt like he let us
down," Sojo said. "He said 'I'm sorry guys.' But it's not his fault. I said,
'Get out of here. Go home and forget about it.' It's one thing about this
game you've got to be strong mentally. If you're not strong mentally, you're
done."
Sojo said Rodriguez "blamed himself. He took it personal. But he's got to
suck it up. He's the best player in baseball and he's supposed to do well [in
the postseason] and he didn't. But it was a team effort. It wasn't just Alex.
It was everyone. We were supposed to accomplish something and we didn't do
it."
Rodriguez admitted to some reporters late Sunday night that he had "played
like a dog" in the LDS and combined with his poor performance against the Red
Sox in last year's LCS elimination, has become the favorite target of sports
talk shows this week.
"It's a shame," Sojo said, "because all he cares about is winning. He comes
to the ballpark and all he talks about is baseball. He's got a long way to go
here. [Rodriguez is signed through the 2010 season.] He has a chance to win
four or five championships."
