... Laments by A-Rod BY MARK HERRMANN STAFF CORRESPONDENT October 27, 2005 HOUSTON - Alex Rodriguez made it onto the field at the World Series after all. And he admitted that he was a reason why he wasn't there with the Yankees and in uniform. "You win as a team, you lose as a team. I didn't do my part," he said before Game 4, when he appeared as part of the Major League Baseball Latino Legends team, which was announced yesterday. He was named the starting shortstop, well ahead of Luis Aparicio, in balloting among fans. Rodriguez acknowledged that he did not look like a legend in the Division Series. "I had a tremendous season, and I played poorly against Anaheim," he said, reprising comments he made after the Yankees were eliminated in Game 5 by the Angels. Dressed in a blue pinstriped suit, standing behind the cage while the White Sox were taking batting practice, the Yankees third baseman also completely dismissed speculation that he had been distracted during the playoffs by the death of his uncle. "I don't want to talk about that. I never attach any of my personal things with baseball. I am totally responsible for the way I play all the time," he said. Using ballplayers' salty slang for "lousy," he added, "When I'm --, I'm --." Having chatted amiably in Spanish with White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, he praised Chicago's postseason ("They've done a beautiful job of playing baseball," Rodriguez said). He lauded the opportunity he had yesterday. "To be on the same team with Roberto Clemente, Juan Marichal, Edgar Martinez, it's pretty neat," he said. "I was standing back in the green room with the guys and the names - it's a pretty neat deal." But his pregame conversation with reporters ultimately came back to the 2005 Yankees. He insisted Joe Torre and Brian Cashman did the best jobs of their careers to keep the season going.
